A critical branching process model for biodiversity
نویسندگان
چکیده
Motivated as a null model for comparison with data, we study the following model for a phylogenetic tree on n extant species. The origin of the clade is a random time in the past, whose (improper) distribution is uniform on (0,∞). After that origin, the process of extinctions and speciations is a continuous-time critical branching process of constant rate, conditioned on having the prescribed number n of species at the present time. We study various mathematical properties of this model as n → ∞ limits: time of origin and of most recent common ancestor; pattern of divergence times within lineage trees; time series of numbers of species; number of extinct species in total, or ancestral to extant species; and “local” structure of the tree itself. We emphasize several mathematical techniques: associating walks with trees, a point process representation of lineage trees, and Brownian limits. MSC 2000 subject classification. Branching Scenarios in Eco-evolutionary Prey-Predator Models
We show in this paper how simulations of ODEs and continuations of systems of algebraic equations can be combined to study the evolution of biodiversity in multi-species systems where phenotypic traits are genetically transmitted. We follow the Adaptive Dynamics (AD) approach, that provides a deterministic approximation of the evolutionary dynamics of stationary coexisting populations in terms ...
متن کاملFood-web formation with recursive evolutionary branching.
A reaction-diffusion model describing the evolutionary dynamics of a food-web was constructed. In this model, predator-prey relationships among organisms were determined by their position in a two-dimensional phenotype space defined by two traits: as prey and as predator. The mutation process is expressed with a diffusion process of biomass in the phenotype space. Numerical simulation of this m...
متن کاملCritical branching captures activity in living neural networks and maximizes the number of metastable States.
Recent experimental work has shown that activity in living neural networks can propagate as a critical branching process that revisits many metastable states. Neural network theory suggests that attracting states could store information, but little is known about how a branching process could form such states. Here we use a branching process to model actual data and to explore metastable states...
متن کاملPower-Law Size Distribution of Supercritical Random Trees
– The probability distribution P (k) of the sizes k of critical trees (branching ratio m = 1) is well known to show a power-law behavior k. Such behavior corresponds to the mean-field approximation for many critical and self-organized critical phenomena. Here we show numerically and analytically that also supercritical trees (branching ration m > 1) are ”critical” in that their size distributio...
متن کاملMorphogenetic Mechanisms of Endothelial Cells During Lumen Formation in Sprouting Angiogenesis
Different mechanisms such as cell migration, proliferation, branching, anastomosis, and lumen formation occur during the angiogenesis process. Lumen formation is one of the critical mechanisms which is not only necessary for the functional plexus but also for continuing of angiogenesis process. Although multiple studies investigated this mechanism during the angiogenesis process in both in vivo...
